After earning a graduate degree in creative writing at Brown University in 1988,
Martine Bellen, a poet, began working on the literary journal
Conjunctions. For over ten years she was senior editor and is now a contributing editor. Ms. Bellen started out in book publishing at Henry Holt and Company and then worked as an editor at Carroll & Graf Publishers. At these publishing houses she edited and acquired books by numerous, successful authors including Denise Mina (she was the first to publish this award-wining crime writer in the U.S.), who is presently published by Little, Brown; the National Book Critics Circle Award winner Maureen Howard; and Amanda Filipacchi (author of
Nude Men, Vapor, and
Love Creeps). Six years ago, Ms. Bellen went into business for herself as an independent editor and bookdoctor. Since that time she has had the opportunity to work with established novelists and nonfiction writers, as well as emerging talent and innovative thinkers and professionals who are writing first books or book proposals.
